Kindergarten registration begins today

BPS registration for K0-K2 and grades 6 and 9 begins today at the family resource centers, along with some other satellite registration centers around Boston. The closest to us is the West Zone Family Resource Center at 515 Hyde Park Ave. in Roslindale. They’re open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BPS recommends registering during certain weeks, depending on the first initial of the parent’s last name (not sure what happens if the parents have different last names). This week it’s A-I. This is to avoid long lines, but really, I’ve been told that you can register whenever you want to, just make sure you do it during the first registration period (through Feb. 6).

You can also preregister online. You’ll still have to go to a family resource center with all the paperwork. That includes three documents to prove residency, immunization records, and birth certificate or passport

We won’t be entering the lottery this year. We decided not to pursue the K0 option, but good luck to everyone else. I’m going to keep making school visits this month and continue posting.

Why didn't you opt to enter the lottery? Are you going to pursue a private option? Interested readers would like to know!

Hi Kevin,

We're not entering the lottery this year, for K0. There aren't very many options for regular ed kids at that age, and I hadn't even toured the Haynes, which offers K0. So our son will continue on at his preschool until 2010.

We'll definitely do the lottery next year for K1. I thought this year could be a scouting year for us, just to see what's out there.
